Eight Bells: Elegy for a Forgotten Sailor

2013 |  Installation, sound, video, and performance

Site specific sound installation, video installation, and performance inspired by archival records indicating that in 1965 a sole female sailor was admitted to Sailor’s Snug Harbor, an all-male institution for aged sailors on Staten Island. “Eight bells,” a nautical euphemism meaning finished, combines ambient sounds of Snug Harbor’s grounds, archival texts, and sea shanties (sailor work songs) remixed and recorded through a feminist lens to explore the way this sailor disrupted institutional norms.
