Eight Bells: Elegy for a Forgotten Sailor

2013 | Sound and Video Installation

Site specific sound installation and live multi-media performance inspired by archival records indicating that in 1965, a sole female sailor was admitted to Sailor’s Snug Harbor, an all-male institution for aged sailors on Staten Island.“Eight bells,” a nautical euphemism meaning finished, combines ambient sounds of Snug Harbor’s grounds, archival texts, and sea shanties (sailor work songs) that have been remixed and recorded through a feminist lens.
