We Have Always Been on Fire

2018 | 6 min

Artist Morgan Bassichis casts a spell to conjure Fire Island's queer ghosts into the present moment. The film combines found footage filmed by queer nightlife documentarian Nelson Sullivan in the Cherry Grove section of Fire Island, just before the onset of the AIDS pandemic, with original material shot in the same location during the summer of 2017. Blending Sullivan’s imagery with Bassichis’s performance, We Have Always Been on Fire traces a queer lineage and engages with loss.
